Fasting the day of Arafat

Aboo Hafsah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace & blessings be upon him, his family, his companions & all those that follow them in righteousness, said:

 

“Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year & the coming year, & fasting on ‘Ashoorah, (the tenth day of Muharram) atones for the sins of previous year.”

 

[(Please note: the sins that are referred to here are the minor sins) Reported by all except

Al-Bukharee & at-Tirmidhee]

In another saying the Prophet’s, peace & blessings be upon him, his family, his companions & all those that follow them in righteousness, wife Hafsah, may Allaah be pleased with her, said:

“Four things the Messenger of Allaah, peace & blessings be upon him, his family, his companions & all those that follow them in righteousness, never neglected: Observing fast on the day of ‘Ashoorah, ‘Arafat, three days every month, & offering Fajr sunnaah prayers early in the morning.”

First Ten Days of Dhull Hijjaah: Days of Virtue & Righteous Deeds

As’slaamu Alaykum wa Rahma’Tullahee,

Unfortunately, many Muslims do not appreciate the greatness of the 10 days that have started today. Let’s revive its true status in our own hearts & in the hearts of those around us, bee’idh-Nillaah.

First Ten Days of Dhull Hijjaah: Days of Virtue & Righteous Deeds

Ibn ‘Abbas says about the ayah, “Remember Allaah during the well known days,” that it refers to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. [This is related by al-Bukharee]

Allaah swears an oath by them, & swearing an oath by something is indicative of its importance & great benefit. Allaah says interpretation of the meaning): “By the dawn; by the 10 nights” [al-Fajr 89:1-2]. Ibn Abbas, Ibn al-Zubayr, Mujaahid & others of the earlier & later generations said that this refers to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Ibn Katheer said: “This is the correct opinion.” [Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 8/413]

The Month of Dhul-Hijjah

The Month of Dhul-Hijjah

By the Grace of Allaah we have started the month of Dhul-Hijjah (the month of Hajj or Pilgrimage), in which Allaah has marked out, for both the pilgrims and the non-pilgrims, some very blessed days. So we shall mention here some of the virtues and rewardful acts that are connected to these blessed days.

DOING GOOD DEEDS IN GENERAL
The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best and most virtuous days of the year. They are the days in which Allaah the Mighty and Majestic – most loves the doing of good deeds. About this the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “The best days in the world are the ten days.”1

The virtues of the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah

Are the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah more special than other days? What are the righteous deeds that it is recommended to do a lot of during these ten days?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Among the great seasons of worship are the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, which Allaah has favoured over other days. It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.” They said: “Not even jihad for the sake of Allaah?” He said: “Not even jihad for the sake of Allaah, unless a man goes out himself for jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2/457
